Skilled work runs on applied science. The people who do it solve problems for a living. And nothing in the American economy gets built, powered, or repaired without them.
That is not what the country sees. For a century we have called this work a fallback, and generations of young people, and their parents, believed it. The shortage everyone is now scrambling to fix started there, with what we taught them to think.

Science Mapping: where the new story begins.
No one has ever documented the science inside skilled work. Not systematically, not as a national reference, not anywhere a parent or a school board could find it.
The CTE Teach-In: where the story comes to life.
CTE students — the future welders, process technicians, electricians, and builders — step into elementary and middle school classrooms to teach hands-on applied science lessons drawn from their own coursework.
In about an hour, younger students work through a real problem alongside someone barely older than they are. The CTE students practice leadership, communication, and collaboration in front of a live audience, and leave with a certificate for having taught the lesson.
The Teach-In has been run in dozens of markets across the country. Campaign after campaign, local television news has covered it in roughly six of ten markets, in major metros and in rural communities national campaigns rarely reach. It has drawn endorsements and shout-outs from superintendents and school principals, even a retweet from a U.S. Senator.
That coverage is not a communications bonus. It is the point. What a family believes about skilled work is formed close to home, and the Teach-In reaches families, students, and local leaders exactly there.
Each Teach-In leaves a trail of evidence: student certificates and portfolios, and host teachers reporting how likely they are to bring applied science into future lessons. The children go home with materials that put the conversation in front of a parent.
Manufacturing, construction, energy, and the data-center industry are all recruiting from the same pool, which makes them competitors.
Convening is not a new idea. Who the Project convenes is.
What brings them to the same table is the recognition that the size of the pool is the problem, and no one industry can fix it alone.
That table is what the Project convenes: decision-makers from trade associations, major employers, education institutions, and workforce investors, working a shared workforce narrative rather than sector-specific agendas. These are not conferences. They are working sessions, small enough that everyone in the room is working.
The convenings are where the Project’s shared voice gets built.
How the findings travel.
Research nobody reads changes nothing.
What science does a working electrician actually run? A machinist, a process technician, a welder? That question is where the Project starts.
The CTE Science Project is commissioning that research with a university partner, occupation by occupation, starting with the trades in shortest supply.
Consider the work itself. The electrician sizing conductors for a data center run is working ampacity, voltage drop across distance, and derating for heat and conduit fill. The machinist holding two thousandths of an inch is managing thermal growth, tool deflection, and how the material moves under the cut. The welder is managing heat input, metallurgy, and how the joint will move as it cools. The process technician is reading a live unit through its instrumentation and catching the deviation before it becomes an incident. None of this is science adjacent. It is science.
The research will be free to anyone who wants it, organized by career pathway so a teacher or a counselor can pull the science behind any program they offer.
What local coverage proves.
National observances like CTE Month build broad awareness and give the field a shared moment to celebrate skilled work. The CTE Teach-In works a different layer.
Local television news still reaches working families more reliably than any national campaign, and it is the hardest earned media to generate consistently. It is also the only proof that a message landed somewhere specific, in a town where a family is deciding what to tell a fifteen-year-old.
National campaigns build the awareness. The Teach-In builds the evidence, market by market.
Every science map becomes material built to move: visuals tailored to each industry, op-eds and commentary placed with the outlets that shape workforce conversations.
A petrochemical association gets the science inside process technology work. A construction association gets the physics and materials science its trades run on. A data-center coalition gets the electrical, thermal, and fluid systems science inside a hyperscale facility. Same research, framed for the people each partner needs to reach.
